Program Helps CP Patients into Adulthood

Pediatricians from the Riley Hospital for Children are reportedly working to develop innovative patient care.

Their most recent project focuses on children with special needs, such as cerebral palsy, and their caregivers.

CYACC Helps Youths

The Indiana University School of Medicine Center for Youth and Adults with Conditions of Childhood (CYACC) is a program that has been designed to address transition and adult life issues.

“Twenty to thirty years ago, it was not unusual for children with disabilities to die before reaching adulthood,” explains Mary Ciccarelli, an assistant professor of medicine at the CYACC. “Today, the life expectancy of these children reaches into adulthood, but there are few programs available to help them transition.”

Lack of Programs for Children with Disabilities

According to medical experts, there are only a handful of programs like the CYACC that are beginning to address these types of needs in children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

This team approach offered provides a hands-on learning opportunity for patients by involving younger physicians.

These residents are reportedly aware of the comprehensive medical, social and educational needs of their patients.
