A settlement was reached earlier this week in the case involving a baby that was born with cerebral palsy.
A jury awarded the mother $13.5 million due to her baby's birth defect.
Debra Gardner filed a cerebral palsy lawsuit, which blamed the Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines and two of its doctors, for mishandling the pregnancy.
The Polk County Jury concluded that both the hospital and its employees were guilty of negligence.
Gardner's pregnancy reportedly continued 42 weeks after her due date and her son Nathaniel had to be delivered via C-section.
Nathanial was born with severe brain injuries due to his lack of oxygen during the pregnancy.
Gardner's attorneys claim that Nathaniel's injuries could have been prevented and are the result of negligence.
Reports state that if the hospital and its staff followed the requirements for patient care, including consistent fetal heart monitoring, then the boy could have been delivered in a better state of health.
