A camp catered towards helping children with disabilities like cerebral palsy was recently held in South Carolina.
Camp Hand to Hands is reportedly held twice a year and helps children, between the ages of three and six, who are living with a type of cerebral palsy that affects one side of the body with paralysis.
According to reports, an estimated 25 percent of children with cerebral palsy have this condition.
Day Camp Lends Support
Camp Hand to Hands is held at the Medical University of South Carolina’s College of Health Professions.
This day camp uses less-forceful modes to restrain the children in order to strengthen their limbs through puppets and braces.
Therapy Proves to be a Success
Therapy students work with the children at the camp in teams of two per child and rotate throughout the day to keep the therapy “fresh and strong.”
“It’s the most widely published, efficacious treatment for children with this presentation,” explains Patty Coker, a therapist and occupational therapy instructor.
This free program began in 2001 and helps both the medical students and children.
