Earlier this week, a federal judge in the state of Kentucky signed a new plan that will help those with disabilities gain some independence.
The plan, which is specific to the state, will require that services are provided service to residents living with disabilities such as cerebral palsy.
According to reports, the recently signed plan was proposed after a class action suit was filed six years ago in Kentucky.
The lawsuit requested that services such as adult day care, housekeeping and therapy for cerebral palsy patients and others living with disabilities be provided.
“I hope the services start flowing,” stated U.S. District Judge Joseph M. Hood.
Many people who watched the plan get signed were overwhelmed with joy, aware that the deal could potentially improve many lives.
“It will just open up their worlds,” says Cheryl Dunn, whose daughter has a disability. “I think the biggest thing is having options in your life-where you work, where you live, things we all take for granted.”
State officials say that estimated $10 million has been put aside for the plan over the next two years and they are focused on getting another $24 million in federal Medicaid money.
