Low Cholesterol Associated With Premature Births

Researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute recently conducted a study that found that white women with low levels of cholesterol are more likely to give birth prematurely than black women.

One of the lead researchers who worked on the study, Dr, Max Muenke, claims that too low of cholesterol in white women could be just as harmful as having too high of cholesterol.

Research Findings

According to the National Academy of Sciences, one in eight infants living in the U.S. are born prematurely.

Premature birth is defined as a gestational age of less than 37 weeks and infants born this early as more susceptible to develop cerebral palsy, respiratory illnesses and be blind or deaf.

Study Questions Low Cholesterol

Muenke, with the help of other researchers, recently conducted a study that analyzed 9,938 women.

The women were divided into two groups, one group contained women that had high levels of cholesterol, while the other had women with low levels.

Researchers found that 12.7 percent of the women who had lower cholesterol levels had premature deliveries.

Muenke reported that only five percent of black women gave birth prematurely while 21 percent of white women had premature infants.
