A college project recently turned into something much more significant as students began designing therapeutic toys for children with cerebral palsy.
The college course project assigned reportedly asked students to design toys for those with special needs and the outcome brought about the first toys catered to disabled children.
How Therapy is Beneficial for CP
Cerebral palsy is a disorder that has a negative impact of the development of the brain and the motor system.
Both physical and occupational therapies have proven to be very successful in patients with the disability, particularly for those who begin therapy at a young age.
However, Karen Kerman, the director of the pediatric rehabilitation center at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, set out to find a way to incorporate therapy into child’s play.
Toys for a Cause
Although there are toys that cater to the cognitive realm, Kerman was determined to create some that were specific to CP patients.
Kerman joined with the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and Brown University medical school students to create prototypes for new therapeutic toys.
“The project has the power to harness the benefits of play, and may have many implications in the future,” says Kerman.
