Apartments Provide An Opportunity for Independence

A new apartment building in Branson, Missouri, is giving people with developmental disabilities like cerebral palsy and autism an opportunity to do something that so many people take for granted—live independently.

The apartments are 550 square feet and come with a central kitchen, living room and bedroom. The complex is located on nine acres of land purchased by the Developmental Connections board and is partially funded by a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Transportation, trainers, and group activities are provided to the residents to help them in their path to independence. Individuals must be diagnosed with cerebral palsy or other severe or chronic disability such as mental retardation or epilepsy prior to age 22 to qualify for the program.

The Developmental Connections board is planning another project to add more apartments and a Programs and Service Center.

“It will take five to 10 years, but it’s a good set of goals,” said board director Max Lytle.
