Cerebral Palsy Researchers Hopeful About Botox

A team of researchers at the Twin Cities Shriners Children’s Hospital in Minnesota have developed a study to compare the effects of different cerebral palsy treatments. One of those treatments—Botox—has the researchers hopeful.

Botox (botulism toxin) is largely known for its cosmetic effects, namely its ability to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. Some doctors think that Botox might be effective for treating overstimulated muscles in patients with cerebral palsy.

Devon’s Story

Devon Krager, now 14, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age four. He suffered a stroke while still in the womb, which caused him damage to the left side of his brain. Consequently, the right side of his body does not function as well as the left.

“I can’t do things with both hands,” he said.

As a study participant, Devon travels to the Twin Cities every six months to receive an injection of Botox in his right arm. According to his mother, Delaine Krager, Devon’s arm has improved since his Botox treatment began last April.

“Now that he’s able to turn things, stuff is staying in his hand when he’s carrying it. He doesn’t feel as incapacitated or as needing to ask for help, and that’s a big step for him because he doesn’t like to have to be in a position where he needs help,” she said.

Over the course of the study, Devon has also undergone aggressive cerebral palsy therapy to strengthen his muscles. In April, Devon will decide whether or not to continue the Botox treatment.

While not a permanent cure for cerebral palsy, researchers said that Botox injections could be effective in helping treat symptoms associated with the disease. Patients seeking more permanent treatments may opt for surgery.
