New research highlights the benefits—including improved self-worth—of Botox in children with cerebral palsy, particularly those who suffer from impaired movement on one side of the body, or hemiplegia.
Researchers at Flinders University in Australia recently conducted a study involving 43 children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Each of the children received four once-a-week occupational therapy sessions, but some of the children also received a Botox injection in the affected limb.
According to the study findings, children who received treatment with Botox exhibited greater improvement in activities participation and body structure than those in the control group after three months.
Additionally, researchers noticed improvements in self-perception in the group of children treated with Botox.
“This study adds to previous studies investigating the effects of injection of botulinum toxin in the upper limb of children with cerebral palsy, but is unique given the findings related to improvement in self-worth,” said study authors.
The study appears in the May issue of the journal Pediatrics.
