Playground Built for All Children

The grand opening of United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama’s Nucor United Community Park is set to happen this afternoon.

However, since most of the park has been complete since early December, some of UCP’s clients have already been able to test out the new park and playground.

Park Accommodates Those with Disabilities

Nucor Community Park is reportedly the first park that has been made to be completely accessible to children with disabilities like cerebral palsy.

“The park is good. It’s fun,” stated Brandon Englebert, who is a client of UCP. “I like coming here. I like the swings and the tables.”

Tony Franklin, the executive director of United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama, says that they have built the playground and park so patients with cerebral palsy can safely play together.

Playground Features

The park possesses a number of features that supposedly make it easy and safe for children with cerebral palsy to play.

“One area is a transition. This is for children who use wheelchairs, but have some lower mobility and upper strength,” explains Franklin. “They can transition over here, pull themselves up and then go down the slides.”

The park was also designed with no stairs and a sandbox that’s raised off the ground for children with wheelchairs.

The ground at the park is cushioned and the grass is artificial turf.
