TheraSuit Therapy Helps Boy with Cerebral Palsy

Children with cerebral palsy often have great difficulty controlling their muscles, and there are now numerous traditional and alternative therapies to help them regain some muscle control.

Jason Drodzyk, a three-year-old boy in Florida, is a primary example of how therapy and a little hard work can produce results. He has tried various therapeutic programs, most recently the TheraSuit method.

Intensive Training
The program is designed to counteract muscle deterioration and loss of bone mass, but it’s not easy.

“It’s really hard-core resistance training,” said Harold Lampert, an occupational therapist.

TheraSuit therapy involves five days of intensive training, three hours a day for three weeks. The three-week training sessions are punctuated by two to three months of rest.

What’s Involved
Before each session, the patient is massaged to increase blood flow and loosen muscles. Then the patient is fitted into the suit, which is then attached to adjustable bungee cords. The cords are connected to a cage-like exercise unit and support the child during the workout.

The therapy allows children with cerebral palsy to work on specific muscles without the force of gravity. The exercises can be challenging, but the child’s hard work pays off.

The Payoff
Jason’s mother, Kim, said his balance, motor skills, and vision have already improved after only one three week TheraSuit training.

“I saw the results so fast. He has benefited from that. He is standing awesome now,” she said.
