New Program Seeks to Educate Expecting Mothers

According to statistics, more and more babies are being born prematurely, putting them at risk for long-term disabilities and even death.

Many new programs are now being offered that aim to educate expecting mothers and their partners about premature births and how to better cope with the stress that often accompanies a pregnancy.

Premature Birth Causing Life Long Disabilities

Babies who are born prematurely are at high risk of developing cerebral palsy, being born with mental retardation and having breathing problems throughout their lives.

A recent report from the March of Dimes states that premature birth is the leading cause of death in the first month for children.

“In New York State, one of every seven babies is born premature,” says Patti Knapp from Thompson Health.

Education Counts

The March of Dimes has set up several programs in the past aiming at educating future parents on disabilities such as cerebral palsy, and their latest one has proven to be effective and helpful.

The Clover Leaf Project provides literary packets to medical facilities and libraries so expecting parents can be better informed about the causes, results and general details of having a premature birth.
