When it comes to treating medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, insurance programs often fall short—covering only the basics. Medical gear aimed at improving the daily lives of special needs children can be costly and is typically not covered by Medicaid or private insurance.
For children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities in Georgia, there's help. Fragile Kids Foundation in Savannah is a statewide nonprofit that helps children with disabilities whose needs are not fully met by the health care system.
The foundation, which is funded by contributions, provides grants for expensive medical equipment such as wheelchair lifts, stair lifts, ramps, positioning chairs, and specialized tricycles and car seats to children deemed “medically fragile.”
The term medically fragile applies to various conditions including muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, certain genetic disorders, respiratory and/or heart disease, and traumatic injuries.
Individuals interested in applying for a grant or equipment loan should contact the foundation directly. Grants and loans are available to eligible applicants up to age 21.
If you or someone you know has cerebral palsy, contact a cerebral palsy attorney to learn more about the rights of cerebral palsy patients.
