A five-year study to see if video games can be applied to the treatment and rehabilitation of cerebral palsy has recently started.
The study will be funded by a $4.75 million grant. Patients will be using specialized gloves to participate in simulator games such as a piano simulator. This game in particular is intended to stimulate the brain through force-feedback to “rewire” the brain, helping to restore hand function.
The ultimate goal of the study is to make therapy for cerebral palsy patients more efficient without requiring more professional supervision.
By introducing video games, the study hopes to make therapy more fun and engaging for the patient. This may, in turn, make therapy more effective.
Engineers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, who are conducting this new study, say that they are now hopeful that this study is a success.
