The iBOT 4000 – an FDA approved technology – provides users with freedom of movement, even allowing them to climb stairs.
The hi-tech wheelchair is especially useful to those with limited mobility, including cerebral palsy patients. The only requisite is that the patients have use of an arm to operate the controls.
Doctors and rehabilitation can prescribe the iBOT to patients they deem would benefit from the technology.
Unlike most wheelchairs, the iBOT has four identical wheels rotate up and over one another to go up and down steps. It also contains sensors that adjust the chair to the person's center of gravity, enabling the user to direct the height of the chair.
“We think this is something that can really benefit patients. It offers many advantages to anything else we've ever seen,” said Robert DeLuca, the FDA scientist who led the iBOT evaluation in 2003.
