Conference To Bring International CP Researchers Together

The Cerebral Palsy (CP) Institute, a non-profit Australian organization, is currently planning an international conference that will bring researchers, doctors and other medical experts together. Set to take place in mid-February 2009, this cerebral palsy conference will provide international medical experts with a forum to learn more about and present findings on recent cerebral palsy research

Over the course of four days, the conference will include a series of keynote addresses, workshops and seminars that will center on the following themes:

  • causes and prevention of cerebral palsy
  • early treatment intervention for CP patients
  • impacts of cerebral palsy on quality of life
  • outlooks for adults with CP
  • rehabilitation and treatment for cerebral palsy.

Sydney, Australia has been chosen as the host city for this event.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is a debilitating condition marked by brain damage and severe developmental impairment. Depending on the severity and cause of their condition, individual cerebral palsy patients will experience different symptoms, which commonly include:

  • abnormal gait (These walking abnormalities can include walking on tiptoes and keeping the knees together when walking.)
  • hearing and/or vision problems
  • mental retardation
  • quadriplegia or paraplegia
  • seizures
  • spasticity
  • speech impairments
  • tremors
  • writhing limbs

To date, medical experts have identified the causes of cerebral palsy to be fetal development problems and medical mistakes made during the birthing process.

Tragically, no cure exists for cerebral palsy. Instead, treatment for this condition involves some combination of medication and various therapies, including physical and occupational therapy

Conference Focuses on Research, Problem Solving

While the central focus of this cerebral palsy conference is on new research and problem solving, the CP Institute has won a few grants that are allowing it to expand the scope of this event and open it up to the public. In fact, 50 non-medical professionals will win free tickets for this conference.

Any profits made from registration fees will be turned into grants for cerebral palsy research. Early-bird registration for this event ends December 10, 2008.
