Largest Cerebral Palsy Study Begins

Researchers from the University of Australia recently launched what will be the world’s largest cerebral palsy study to date.

The study will reportedly analyze the different factors that cause cerebral palsy in newborns and question whether or not genetics play a key role.

Newborns with Cerebral Palsy

At pregnancy and during birth, cerebral palsy is one of the greatest risks to mothers and children worldwide.

An estimated one in every 500 children worldwide is affected by this life altering disability.

Worldwide Study Begins

For the study, researchers are gathering cheek swabs from 10,000 mothers and their children from around the world.

5,000 of the families will be those who are directly affected by cerebral palsy and the other 5,000 participants will consist of those who haven’t been affected.

“Our study will investigate a key issue behind cerebral palsy: whether genetic factors make women more vulnerable to environmental risks that affect the brain of their unborn child,” says the lead researcher for the study, Professor Alastair MacLennan.
