New reports shed further light on the benefits of magnesium sulfate for mothers who are at risk of having a preterm delivery.
The compound reportedly can cut the risk of cerebral palsy in their child in half, according to a new study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The study analyzed 2, 241 women who were at risk of giving birth early and were given magnesium sulfate or a placebo.
Researchers then compared each group of infants to see the differences in their movement and brain functioning.
Cerebral palsy is typically detected by abnormal movement control and can cause limited activity to the developing fetal and infant brain.
In studies from the past, magnesium sulfate hasn’t proven to be an effective treatment for the delay of early labor, but has proven to be effective for maternal high blood pressure linked with pregnancy.
This most recent study found that moderate or severe cerebral palsy was diagnosed in only 1.9 percent of the group treated with the compound in comparison to the 3.5 percent diagnosed in the placebo group.
“If deemed to be at high or immediate risk of delivery prior to 32 weeks, women and their doctors should consider using magnesium sulfate to prevent their child from having cerebral palsy,” explains Dr. Dwight J. Rouse, a professor at the University of Alabama.
