Recent reports claim that children with cerebral palsy can greatly benefit from the sport of martial arts.
By learning the kicks, punches and blocks, researchers found that children with disabilities showed a vast improvement in self-esteem.
Dr. Jan Brunstrom, the director of the Cerebral Palsy Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, helps children ages seven and up to perfect their martial arts skills while gaining confidence through the center’s “Fighters with Courage and Power” classes.
These martial arts classes specifically cater to children with disabilities, including kids with cerebral palsy, and teach the kids a form of martial arts known as Kajukenbo.
Kajukenbo is a combination of karate, jujitsu, kung fu, and judo.
The classes offer a full-body workout for patients that require children who are used to sitting most of the day to stand.
“The martial arts help children with disabilities with their balance, stamina, mental clarity and focus,” explains Ken Sills, an instructor at the hospital.
Martial arts has also proven to help those with cerebral palsy so much that they no longer need daily therapy.
