Lisa Henry, was recently found guilty for the death of her son, Michael, 26, who had cerebral palsy and passed away in a house fire in 2006.
Henry pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but was convicted of arson, aggravated murder, and three counts of child endangerment.
Incident Leading to Court Case
In September of 2006, the trial against Lisa Henry, who was the sole caretaker of Michael and her three young grandchildren, began.
According to court reports, Michael, who was confined to a wheelchair, had been placed in his bed and tucked in so he was unable to escape.
Gasoline was poured on him and all over the house before it was set on fire.
The three young children were able to escape the house without injuries; however, Michael was killed in the fire.
The Verdict
David McGee, attorney for Henry, says that Michael had already passed from natural causes before the fire and when Henry found him, she had a fit of insanity, which provoked her to set the house on fire.
McGee claims Henry didn't intentionally kill her son, but that he had already died.
The prosecutor for the case, Karen Kowall, argued that Henry consciously murdered her son.
Her son-in-law had reportedly threatened to call Human Services on Henry saying that she was abusing Michael and the boy was living in unsanitary conditions.
“It was a tough case, but we felt the evidence presented was very compelling,” says one juror.
When the verdict was read, Henry allegedly showed no emotion.
