New research findings suggest that giving nitroglycerin—a common medication used to treat chest pains—to women undergoing a premature labor could actually help extend their pregnancy and reduce the risk of birth defects such as cerebral palsy.
The increase in the health of newborns was most prominent in those born very early—between 24 weeks to 28 weeks, according to the study conducted by researchers at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
Preemie births are the leading cause of disability and death in babies worldwide. The new study, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is the first one to identify a drug that halts premature labor and improves babies' health.

The five-year-study involved 153 female participants and was funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research.
