Trial for Abused Girl with CP Under Way

The trial for a girl with cerebral palsy who was allegedly abused and deprived food by her caretakers is now under way in Albany, NY.

Abuse Allegations

According to reports, Christina Cowart and her boyfriend at the time, now husband, Mark Renfro, were arrested in 2005 for allegedly withholding food from the five children under their care.

One of the children, who is now 8 years old, suffers from cerebral palsy and seizures.

On a visit to the Renfro home, an employee from the state Department of Human Services saw that the girl looked emaciated and the other children told the employee the girl is sometimes tied up and put into the closet.

Reports claim that after the girl and her twin brother were put under different care they ate immense amounts of food and exhibited “hoarding behaviors.”

The girl was hospitalized and doctors said she has experienced food deprivation.

“Had she not been removed from the home…she would have died from starvation,” claims attorney Michael Wynhausen.
