Therapists at the Bobath Centre in East Finchley, England claim alternative therapy through physiotherapy involving patients with cerebral palsy can improve their physical and mental development.
Now one of the most popular degree courses in the UK, physiotherapy is based on the theory that if a child’s movement is impaired than their development will also be affected. By using physiotherapy to encourage and increase a child’s ability to move, the cerebral palsy patients are able to explore their environment and experience situations the way able-bodied children can, allowing easier physical and mental development.
Since cerebral palsy is suffered when part of the brain is damaged, the child almost always has some level of movement impairment. Specific cerebral palsy symptoms are dependent upon the area of the brain affected, but there may also be problems with vision or perceptual awareness, speech and learning difficulties.
With physiotherapy, therapists say they are able to take an individual approach with each cerebral palsy patient. Therapists focus on getting the children involved in each session, and sometimes other members of the family are encouraged to get involved so that they are exposed to ways to incorporate the alternative cerebral palsy therapy into daily life.
The therapists at the Bobath centre say they are able to provide cerebral palsy patients with more treatment than working on their muscles. By often disguising the therapy as play or normal activities, the therapists say they are able to teach many cerebral palsy children to live normal lives.
If you have a child with cerebral palsy, and believe your child may be entitled to receive compensation to help cover the cost of therapy, contact a cerebral palsy attorney.
