Polish Cerebral Palsy Center Uses Russian Space Program Equipment

-May 18, 2005

A center in Piastow, Poland, the Euromed Rehabilitation Center, has a month-long intensive-therapy program for cerebral palsy children. Using equipment designed for the Russian space program, the center also employs the Adeli suite - a vest, shorts, kneepads and shoes connected by resistance cords.

Use of the Adeli suit is to develop brain-to-muscle coordination in people with cerebral palsy and other conditions. Originally, the use of the suits was created to combat muscle deterioration in the weightlessness of space.

According to supporters of the cerebral palsy center, the unique approach can only be found in Poland and more families are willing to travel to Poland for a month in hopes of making progress in cerebral palsy treatment with their children. The one-of-a-kind cerebral palsy therapy employs a team of doctors to work with the cerebral palsy child, a dorm facility is available for long-term treatment and a holistic approach is taken.

The month long treatment is intense, requiring a four to six hour session six days a week, but visitors believe the progress in the end is worth the struggles during the therapy. Because the cerebral palsy treatment sessions are so intense, the full benefits are often not visible until the children return home and recuperate.

Cerebral palsy is the term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination. Every year, about 10,000 babies in the U.S. develop cerebral palsy.

Contact a cerebral palsy lawyer if your child sustained a birth injury and you suspect a medical error was the cause of the injury.
