Study Reveals Lasting Effects of Premature Birth

A recent study found that infants who are born prematurely are more likely to die during childhood and less likely to have children in adulthood.

Premature babies were also found to be at greater risk of developing disabilities like cerebral palsy.

More Problems Revealed

Researchers say they always knew that premature babies faced neurological and developmental problems.

However, these new findings have revealed how broad the complications can be throughout the child’s life.

Study Conducted

The study found that as the percentage of premature infants who live through their first year continues to increase, the number of injured infants and adults will also rise.

Norwegian data was reportedly used in the study.

“Norway demonstrates better outcomes than the United States, which has persistent, stark racial disparities, in care for the premature,” explained Melissa M. Adams, from RTI International in Atlanta.

Statistics in the U.S.

According to statistics, one in eight babies born in the U.S. is born prematurely and the consequences can be devastating.

Babies who are born before 38 weeks or longer are at risk for cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, lung diseases, and other developmental diseases.
