Recent reports show that the amount of premature births occurring in the U.S. has increased in the past few years.
Though medical experts are aware of what makes a woman have a healthy, full-term pregnancy, they aren't exactly sure yet as to why some women give birth prematurely.
According to reports, more than 12. 5 percent of infants born in 2004 were born before the mother had completed a full 37-week pregnancy cycle.
Many premature babies are more susceptible to having immediate and future health problems than those babies that are delivered after the 37-week period.
Diseases such as cerebral palsy can occur in babies born prematurely and often these infants will face breathing problems throughout their lives.
Dr. Robert Gutierrez explains that, “Premature births remain a mystery mostly because a cascade of factors appear to be at work.”
Medical experts have found that women with infection in their genital and urinary tract can often have premature births.
“There are so many variables,” says Dr. Gutierrez, “And every socioeconomic class is affected, not just mothers who receive good access to healthcare.”
He explains that women who have cervical abnormalities and those who are having two or more babies are also risk factors for cerebral palsy.
