New Pill Swallowing Cup For Children with Dysphagia

About 40 percent of children suffering from developmental problems such as cerebral palsy, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have difficulty swallowing, a condition known as dysphagia.

Children with dysphagia oftentimes can't take their medication when they are sick because of their condition. “For already concerned parents, it can be a nightmare. As a result of the condition, the child can get sicker, dehydrated or even end up in a hospital,” said Roger Heilos, a former medical products engineer for Johnson & Johnson.

Currently, Heilos is the president of Oralflo Technologies, LLC, a company that has manufactured an innovative medical device designed for adults and children suffering with dysphagia.

The Oralflo Pill Swallowing Cup works to relieve the discomfort and anxiety many people associate with taking pills and has been an essential accessory in hospitals, doctor's offices, and daycare centers.

“I saw my own family members suffer with dysphagia and decided to do something about it,” says Heilos. “The Oralflo Pill Swallowing Cup was created to assist the natural swallowing reflect, so children and adults can take pills without gagging or choking. It's backed by more than two years of research.”

The cup's unique design also eliminates the need to crush pills so they can be taken whole, which is vital for coated and time-released pills. It is currently pending a patent and is registered with the Food and Drug Administration as a Class III medical device.
