Underwater treadmill therapy—once used only on horses—is being tested by researchers as a new physical therapy treatment to help children with cerebral palsy.
A new experimental study is evaluating the effects of the underwater treadmill on children who suffer the symptoms of cerebral palsy such as loss of muscle control and strength, poor posture, and difficultly walking.
According to Dr. Don Morgan, an Exercise Physiologist at Middle Tennessee State University, the resistance from the water helps these children build leg muscles, without straining their joints.
The children in the study have significantly improved heart function and increased energy to walk and even climb stairs, whereas before the therapy either activity was extremely difficult.
“It’s a challenge. It’d be a challenge for anybody. They’re demonstrating to themselves and to their families that hey, look at what I’ve been able to do. I’ve gotten stronger. I’ve gotten fitter, and it’s a wonderful thing to be proud of,” said Dr. Morgan.
The underwater treadmill may next be tested on children with cerebral palsy that are in wheelchairs or use walkers.
If your child suffers from cerebral palsy, contact a cerebral palsy attorney who can explain your child's legal rights and help explore possible therapy options.
