Conductive Education

Conductive education is a type of therapy for children with cerebral palsy or similar neurological disorders that effect motor function. Conductive education offers an educational approach to treating the symptoms and effects of cerebral palsy and aims to help children with this condition live up to their maximum potential. This form of therapy enhances motor skills and trains children to perform everyday tasks such as feeding or dressing themselves.

Conductive education is not designed to cure cerebral palsy, or any other disorder. Instead it is an alternative method of training children who struggle with movement, interaction, problem solving, or performing basic daily functions.

What Conductive Education Entails

Conductive education treatment procedures for cerebral palsy vary, but most of the activities are physical. It is through these physical activities that patients begin to see an overall improvement in their condition. All of the educational activities are specially chosen to address each individual's personal needs. Some of the tactics educators employ to encourage learning and independence include:

  • Physical assistance – Hands-on guidance
  • Specialized verbal guidance
  • Adherence to a daily schedule that caters to each child's needs
  • Training in physical tasks - Activities may include practicing to stand, walk, eat, and use the bathroom independently. For example, one method used to teach a child to feed himself involves asking the child to hold the spoon or fork in his hand with his arm properly positioned to bring the food near his mouth. Holding the hand steady, the child is required to move his head in the proper position to take a bite while stabilizing all other movement.
  • Group interaction - Groups are often very conducive to certain methods of training. They also promote social interaction and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Training with specialized equipment - Conductive education centers also employ a vast array of equipment and toys that can facilitate a child's cognitive and physical learning.
