The family of a boy who suffered brain damage and is now living with cerebral palsy was recently awarded $11.5 million in their suit against the hospital where he was born.
The parents of the child sued Northwestern Memorial Hospital for the botched delivery, which led to their son’s injuries.
Boy Injured During Delivery
The brain injuries occurred when doctors and nurses reportedly attempted to deliver Joshua Radis using a vacuum extractor.
According to reports, “the vacuum was removed after eight minutes because the doctor believed that with one or two more pushes, the baby would be delivered.”
However, it wasn’t until the 15th push, more than a half hour later that Joshua was born.
By this time, the boy had been deprived of oxygen for so long that it left him with permanent brain damage and subsequent cerebral palsy.
Doctors and Nurses Blamed for Boy’s CP
Stefanie and Mark Radis filed the suit in 2003 against the doctors and nurses who partook in the delivery, as well as the hospital, for carelessness and negligence.
The settlement will help to pay for boy’s medical care, therapy and the aide he will need in order to attend school.
