According to a recent study, giving magnesium sulfate to pregnant women who are at risk of delivering premature babies can be extremely beneficial.
The study shows that the drug cuts the chances of premature babies having cerebral palsy in half.
Premature Babies and CP
Premature babies are at high risk for developing cerebral palsy due to a disorder that’s caused by brain damage before, during or after birth.
However, the new study, conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina, shows that giving magnesium sulfate and Epsom salt to pregnant women prevent children from having this condition.
Study Conducted
In the study, doctors randomly assigned some women to get magnesium sulfate during their pregnancy while others got a placebo.
About 1.9 percent of women on magnesium sulfate had babies with moderate to severe cases of cerebral palsy, according to the study’s co-author, John Thorp.
“This is a great breakthrough,” explains Thorp. “These are children who have their whole lives in front of them.”
