A new program hosted by the CentraState Healthcare System in New Jersey is teaching children with disabilities the basics of scuba diving.
The instructors involved with the program are dedicated to teaching their skills to kids with special needs while at the same time building their confidence.
Instructors Break New Ground
Stewart Snyder and Ray Ruffini are both certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors and teach other dive instructors through the Handicapped Scuba Association.
“We were amazed that kids that were land-bound…once they got in the water, they were set free,” says Snyder.
The classes are going to continue indefinitely with each session taking place for a six-week period.
How Kids Can Benefit
Each class contains a group of six students with special needs ranging from autism to cerebral palsy.
The students reportedly learn everything from being comfortable in the pool to putting their heads under water.
Once they are successful with these tasks, they can learn how to properly handle the dive equipment.
“Water is a powerful tool,” explains Ellen Stein the fitness director at the Fitness and Wellness Center, where the classes are held.
