Virginia Obstetricians Responsible for Birth Injury

Two obstetricians in northern Virginia have been punished by state medical board for the birth injuries they were negligent with.

The women had previously been given immunity from being sued over the birth injury case and this recent sanction marks the first time that the state has taken such action in over two decades.

Doctors Reprimanded

Dr. Evelyn Anna Ruelaz and Dr. Regina Burton were both reprimanded for how they handled the births that resulted in the infants sustaining lifelong injuries.

Lee Ann Hershberger was one of the many women who was personally affected by the negligence and errors of the doctors.

Hershberger reportedly was left to give birth alone at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital as her baby’s heart beat slowed and the infant’s oxygen was cut off.

Due to the improper delivery, Joseph was born with cerebral palsy.

Doctors Admit to Improper Care of Patients

In a 2002 case, the board allegedly found that Burton failed to adequately care for a pregnant woman with a history of hemorrhaging during her birth.

Ruelaz and Burton admitted that they didn’t pay close enough attention to the conditions of the patients or their babies.
